JUDO

Judo (meaning “gentle way”) is a modern martial art and combat sport created in Japan in 1882 by Dr. Kano Jigoro. The soft method is characterized by the indirect application of force to defeat an opponent. More specifically, it is the principle of using one’s opponent’s strength against him and adapting well to changing circumstances.

Jūdōka are ranked according to skill and knowledge of judo, and their rank is reflected by their belt color. This ranking system was introduced into the martial arts by judo’s founder and has since been widely adopted by modern martial arts.

The philosophy and worldwide spread of judo has led to the development of a number of offshoots such as Sambo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
