About Coach

A native New Yorker who grew up in Manhattan’s Chinatown, Ed studied Southern Praying Mantis Style Kung Fu under Grandmaster Yee and Sifu Quan at C.K.F.A. before starting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2008. He sees BJJ as an opportunity to improve himself, both physically and mentally. Ed believes discipline and respect are two main keys to improving it: The discipline to learn through practice and repetition and the respect that you have for your teammates and their skills. Ed has been a licensed massage therapist, ACE certified personal trainer, and group fitness instructor for almost thirty years and started coaching Jiu-Jitsu in 2021. He teaches that the skill is in the details and believes Jiu-Jitsu can be for everyone, no matter their age, size, or speed. He understands that this is an activity you can train for the long term, stresses that everyone is a teammate, and focuses on safety first in his classes. In December 2023, Ed received his black belt from Sensei Teimoc Johnston-Ono and is a green belt in Judo under Sensei Kevin McGrath. He is also a youth basketball coach and referee and enjoys everything from playing video games to riding roller coasters until he’s sick.
