Five Points Academy Judo and Brazilian JiuJitsu

Judo, meaning “gentle way”, is a modern Japanese martial art that originated in Japan in the late nineteenth century. The soft method is characterized by the indirect application of force to defeat an opponent. More specifically, it is the principle of using one’s opponent’s strength against him and adapting well to changing circumstances. Jūdōka are ranked according to skill and knowledge of judo, and their rank is reflected by their belt color. This ranking system was introduced into the martial arts by judo’s founder and has since been widely adopted by modern martial arts.

Brazilian jiu-jitsu  is a martial art, combat sport, and a self defense system that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting. Derived from Kodokan newaza, Brazilian jiu-jitsu eventually came to be its own art through the experimentations, practices, and adaptation from the Judo knowledge of Carlos and Hélio Gracie, who then passed their knowledge on to their extended family.

BJJ promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant by using proper technique, leverage, and most notably, taking the fight to the ground, and then applying joint-locks and chokeholds to defeat the opponent.  Sparring and live drilling play a major role in training, and a premium is placed on performance, especially in competition, in relation to progress and ascension through its ranking system. Five Points Academy is very pleased to host the Workshop Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Team.
